What is the Michael Ochs Archives?

What is the Michael Ochs Archives?

On the 5th floor of the Getty Images Los Angeles offices, we house about 5 million photographs.

This collection is most famous for telling the story of 20th Century music from jazz to grunge and everything in between.

Jazz singer Billie Holiday performs at the Club Downbeat in February 1947 in New York City, New York.

Kurt Cobain. Circa 1993, by Sam Jones

But there is so much more hidden in the files and on Getty Images that you may have never associated with the MOA or thought we had down there.

In fact, there are just about as many images of the most famous &/or infamous people from that era as we have of musicians.

Richard Pryor, Early 1960s, Los Angeles, California

NFL star O.J. Simspson sits with his wife Marguerite (Whitley) Simpson, daughter Arnelle and son Jason during a portrait session on January 8, 1973 in Los Angeles, California.

There are also pioneering early color photographs.

And so many other random gems. Like for instance a woman on an alligator

A woman poses for a portrait while riding an alligator at The Los Angeles Alligator Farm at 3627 Mission Road in the Lincoln Heights area on September 30, 1949 in Los Angeles, California.

And still more… yet to be discovered.

Awkward Band Photos: Episode 2

Tubby Boots

Not necessarily a band. A comic who dressed in drag and was introduced at his own shows as, “Living legend, 400 pounds of sex-rated comedy, Mr. Tubby Boots.” Count me in...

Cherrie Currie of the Runaways

Pro tip: It’s always good to hump various objects on stage. A microphone is as good a choice as any. And as a bonus it is particularly phallic.

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys

I guess he doesn’t like his pepper straight up. In this session he also eats a shoe, and a vinyl record. A true gourmand.

The Beatles

Q: What are we gonna do with this creepy snowman?
A: I dunno, call up The Beatles?
Great success!

Simon & Garfunkel

It appears they got the invitations to their gay wedding squared away about 50 years before it was legalized. They were always at the vanguard of music and... social issues!

Charlie Daniels

This was actually released by his record label as a publicity photo. No one noticed the gigantic rip in the crotch of his pants or maybe this was a planned wardrobe malfunction? Conspiracy theorists discuss...

The Osmonds

When you dress your family like they are the Heaven's Gate cult awaiting impending suicide launch to a spaceship following the comet Hale-Bopp. Enjoy!

Tina Turner

Not sure why they didn’t use this one for an album cover?

image

The Monkees

Somebody spent a lot of time and money and probably psychedelic drugs to flesh out this costume choice. Hats off to the designer! And thank you Davy Jones for standing like a zombie robot.

Stay tuned for Post #3 whenever the fuck I get around to it.
Cheers!

Welcome to Awkward Band Photos!

Over the years of working with the Michael Ochs Archives and Getty Images, there have been some photos that just seemed a little off.
So we’re gonna start a semi-regular posting of…

Awkward Band Photos

Hall & Oates
We have a number of images from this session, but I think this one really hits the ole awkward nail on the head. You’ve got 2 presumably platonic band mates cuddled up together on a Vespa scooter. One of them is wearing wedge sandals and bell-bottom pants. Not that there’s anything wrong with any of these things. It’s just that all together, this image purports something I don’t think they intended.

Milli Vanilli
Not sure who the target audience is here. But maybe, it’s us?

Alabama

I found this image years ago, and dubbed it the “Alabama Reacharound.” We have shots from several different concerts of the band pulling off these complicated rock n’ roll gymnastics. So they must’ve rehearsed it. That’s quite a thing to imagine. Not sure how it sounds, but it sure does look a wee bit awkward.
image

Jimmy Nelson with his puppets
Ok, ok. This is not a band photo. And it’s not so much awkward as creepy.  Anyway, I came across it doing a client request a few months ago. I needed to share it because It has haunted me ever since. Perhaps I can sleep again now. Good luck…

The Osmonds
I don’t think there is a picture of The Osmonds that isn’t awkward. And by awkward, I mean awesome! It was hard to settle on just one. But white matching tuxedos with pastel sequins? Sold!

Bob Geldof
Would you kindly hump that taxidermied tiger for us? Perfect thanks!

The Allman Brothers
OK, we’ve got 6 red-blooded American men. Get naked and squat in a stream. Don’t forget to check each other for leeches boys. Done & done. Take that Milli Vanilli!

The Runaways
How about some underage drinking in a random dive bar in Detroit thousands of miles away from your parents under the watchful eye of confirmed sex-freak Kim Fowley? Sure girls. Would you like that straight up or on the rocks?

Kid n’ Play
For how perfectly planned out their mighty haircut angles are, you might have thought they would have noticed the completely unintentional romantic overtones.
image

Three Dog Night
We have shown you the “Alabama Reacharound.” I don’t even know what to make of this. The dude riding caboose looks pretty disinterested. The guy on the bottom looks like he’s having a little too much fun. If there were such a thing.

Catch you in our next installment of Awkward Band Photos.
In the meantime, enjoy and please share with us your suggestions!
